REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: This position reports to the Care Center Manager.
MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Qualifications: High school diploma or GED. Graduate of an approved Medical Assisting program. Certification though American Association of Medical Assistants or California Medical Assistants Association. CPR must be current.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years demonstrated medical assisting skills in ambulatory care. Ability to work in a team environment. Willing to cross train in other department. Excellent communication skills.
- Knowledge: Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology. Knowledge of what constitutes a medical emergency requiring a physician or licensed nurse?s attention. Knowledge of scope of practice of a Medical Assistant. Knowledge and understanding of medication administration. Knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of computers and their applications.
- Special Skills/Equipment: Ability to read, write, and verbally communicate effectively in English. Dosage calculation skills as proven by successful completion of medication test. Competency in basic Medical Assisting skills such as chart documentation, taking vital signs, preparing patients for exam, etc. Ability to efficiently operate office equipment, i.e. fax, photocopy machine, etc. Ability to accept, implement and evaluate change. QUANTIFIABLE DIMENSIONS:
- Escort and prepare an average of 20-30 patients per day
- Respond to an average of 30-40 phone calls per day
- Respond to an average of 30-40 pharmacy calls per day.
- Maintain and keep clean 2-3 exam rooms
FREEDOM TO ACT/ACCOUNTABILITY:
This position has authority to make decisions using judgment in the workflow and procedures within the Patient Services care area. This position has the authority to prioritize patient flow according to patient needs. This position does not have the authority to approve expenditures.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS/CONTACTS:
INTERNAL: Physicians to assist as needed; other department personnel to share information needed to complete job duties; peers to share information as needed
EXTERNAL: Patients and patient?s families to assist in implementation of medical care; insurance companies share information; Pharmacies, Pharmaceutical Reps to facilitate medication orders and samples and other medical providers and health care facilities to share information.

This position may promote to the Care Center Manager if the job qualifications for that position have been met.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
I. Preparing Patient for Physician Visit or Procedure
- Greet and escort patient to exam room in friendly courteous manner
- Obtain reason for visit and document in the medical record, signing any chart entries
- Obtain appropriate vital signs and document in the medical record
- Prepare patient as needed for exam or procedure
- Explain any procedures to the patient as may be needed
- Assist the physician as needed with the exam or procedure, as the scope of practice allows
- Assists the physician or other medical provider in implementing the plan of care for the patient
- Provides patient education as directed by the physician or provider
- Completes all order forms for x-ray, lab, ECG, etc.
- Performs ECG?s if ECG Technician is unavailable
- Correctly apply splints and braces as ordered by the physician or provider
- Give treatments as ordered by physician or provider

II. Handling Phone Messages From Patients, Pharmacies and Others
- Prioritize phone messages according to acuity
- If needed, contact patient to obtain further information to clarify the message taken by the receptionist
- Obtain physician or provider advice on patient phone call
- Contact patient or caller to share physician advice in a courteous, efficient and timely manner
- Document all advice given to the patient accurately, concisely, and legibly
- After physician approves of prescription refills, fax, or call the orders to the pharmacy
- III. Administering Medications
- Obtain written order from physician or provider as needed, per scope of practice
- Draw up appropriate medications, complying with Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation policies
- Use proper techniques and always appropriately deploy safety devices on all syringes
- Verify patient allergies before administering the medication
- Document administration of medication in patient medical record
- IV. Other Duties
- Maintains the exam rooms, nurses podium and nurses? station to ensure a clean, neat and safe environment
- Ordering and stocking supplies
- Obtaining and transporting specimens
- Washing and packaging instruments and sterilizing them in department if appropriate
- Changing solutions for use in sterilization of instruments
- Schedule surgeries
- Obtain insurance authorization as needed
- Prepares all forms and requisitions as needed by the physician or other medical provider
- Coordinates patient appointment with other clinical departments
- Perform appropriate lab tests and document results
- Refer nursing care beyond the scope of a Medical Assistant (M.A.) duties to a Registered Nurse (R.N.) or if not available to a physician
- Participate in improving the quality of patient care by reporting problems to the Patient Services Supervisor
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor
